A flavour of places and restaurants to visit
Civray is situated in the Vienne department and Poitou-Charentes region (now part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region), in the west of France at 48 kilometres from Poitiers, the department capital (general information: Civray is 338 kilometres from Paris). It has the stunning Saint-Nicolas church, a 12th century Romanesque building. It is a beautiful example of architectural genius with its carved façade and colourful interior.
Civray also has its own cinema and has regular showing of movies in English.
Popular places to visit nearby include Ruffec at 15 km and Nanteuil-en-Vallee at 17 km. Poitiers is about 55kms away and very cosmopolitan, great for shopping as is Angouleme both also having stunning cathedrals and architectural wonders.
Cognac is about an hour away and well worth a visit around one of the famous cognac houses. For those looking for day trips La Rochelle, a beautiful seaside town offering great restaurants and shopping is highly recommended as is Bordeaux with its surrounding vineyards.
For a fun family day out try Futuroscope, a futuristic theme part located just outside Poitiers or Puy du Fou which brings in the crowds worldwide. Our nearest family day out attraction is La Vallee des Singes, if you are a monkey or gorilla fan – this is a must!
Civray main market is held on Tuesdays 8am to 12.30pm, it gets bigger and bigger as the year goes on and offers an eclectic mix of locally grown produce, clothing and household goods. There is a smaller market on Friday mornings mostly selling fresh produce.
There is a night market on the first Friday in August and this one is totally different from the general market. It offers artisan products like jewellery, crafts, clothing. It starts early evening at around 6pm and goes on until about midnight. Cafes, bars and food stalls remain open as well.
In addition to our local market there are some other ones worth a visit, a good website for all info is www.francethisway.com

The most highly celebrated Bastille day occurs in force across our region. Civray boasts the largest Brocante on 14th July, which runs along the River Charente. There is a spectacular display of fireworks in the evening.
